Receiving a Swift postcard – good news about Swifts in your area

Buxton Civic Association volunteers are delivering 1000 postcards to Swift Streets to help spread the word about the importance of our town for Swifts and help you to protect their nest sites.

Perfect house guests: Swifts fly into the nest quickly, and make no mess so you may not even know that your home is shared by these migrant birds.

If you need to undertake building work or maintenance on your house, or know that work is taking place on a Swift Street, please come to us for advice.

The best ways to protect Swift nests:

      1. Maintain existing nest entrances and cavities when maintenance takes place. The entrance holes are usually very small, and cavities can be enclosed internally to maintain the nest space whilst draught proofing/insulating the property.

      1. If nest entrances have been blocked or have to be blocked through maintenance work, the next best solution is adding nest bricks which last the lifetime of the building.

      1. If 1. or 2. are not possible, Swift boxes can be added externally, as close as possible to the old nest entrances.
